When did you first become aware of filmmaking?
In High School - I had a class on filmmaking and I was hooked!
What was your first dabble in creating something film related?
High School - we studied and made a film.
Did your education involve any filmmaking?
Yes I have a BA in Film so studied at university level and was at film school in Prague for 6 months. You would be surprised to know I also took an acting course - I made a B+ in that one as it was more for me to understand what actors go through as I never wanted to be in front of an audience or camera :)
What did you enjoy about After the Party?
It was awesome to showcase contemporary Wellington as I've worked on other shows where we dress Wellington for LA or some fantasy world.
Why do you think it was so successful?
The performances are stand out and all of the teamwork allowed for a high quality programme and showing off contemporary Wellington.
You have worked on a number of NZ films how is that experience unique?
Each film is unique so I work with what I've been given to maximise what is possible. Working on NZ films is something special - the thoughtfulness that goes into every shot and every decision.
How important is it for filmmakers to tell stories from your own unique perspective and how does that influence your work?
Filmmakers is why I continue to work in this business. They are relentless, but the creative force that comes alongside is worthwhile.
Tell me about the skill set you need to produce a film?
There is such a range of skills you need to produce a film from budget, financing, negotiating, to troubleshooting. Understanding the big picture to help facilitate solutions that sit within the filmmakers vision. It's a multifaceted journey you take with the filmmaker to support their vision.
What is the most difficult aspect of producing? What is the most fun?
The lack of sleep :) Your brain is supercharged and that is both the most fun and also the most difficult to try and have a bit of life work balance.
What does a line producer do?
It is also a multifaceted job that entails working within the budget the producers have set out, hiring crew, working with the team of people to support the filmmakers vision.
Can you tell me about your collaborations with other film talented people and how you work together?
Respect for one another and solution based with empathy.
What advice can you offer to aspiring filmmakers in Aotearoa?
Be kind, ask questions, be brave.
What are your aspirations for the future?
Produce heaps of NZ films!
