Te Tohu
E $50,000 te rahinga o te pūtea ka tukuna ki te tangata whiwhi kotahi mō Te Aupounamu. Kua tukuna hoki e ngā paewhiri o mua, ētahi tohu motuhake hei whakamihi i “ngā takohatanga whakahirahira ki te Hapori Kiriata Māori.” E whakaaturia ana tēnei takoha i roto i te rētōtanga o ngā wheako, o ngā pūmanawa me ngā whakatutukitanga.

Te Aupounamu Māori Screen Excellence Award has been established alongside Te Rautaki Māori o Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga, the New Zealand Film Commission’s Māori Strategy. The annual award is a way of recognising and celebrating members of the Māori filmmaking community who have displayed a high-level contribution and/or achievement in screen storytelling.

The Award
The Māori Screen Excellence Award will offer a maximum of a $50,000 grant to one recipient. Previous panels have also awarded special recognition awards acknowledging “significant contributions to the Māori Film Community”. The significance of this contribution will be reflected in their depth of experience, skill and achievements.
Eligibility
Applications for this award are by nomination by filling out this form. Anyone can submit a nomination; however,
- must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
- nominees must be Māori and;
- nominees must be actively participating in the screen industry in New Zealand or overseas.
- Filmmakers are permitted to self-nominate.
- The award is open to writers, directors, producers, heads of department, established actors, and screen industry representatives.
Prior recipients of Te Aupounamu are not eligible for this award.
What you need
The person making the nomination needs to provide
- a biography including film credits or achievements
- description of what they believe makes the filmmaker successful and;
- why they should be acknowledged
- any other supporting information
This fund is now closed to nominations.
Funding decision
The selection panel will consist of two NZFC representatives and at least two Ngā Aho Whakaari and/or External Māori Industry representatives. The panel will meet and make recommendations on the Award recipient(s), with the final decision to be made by the NZFC CEO.
The winner of Te Aupounamu will be advised and the decision will be published by a special press released on the NZFC and Ngā Aho Whakaari websites.
