The Tautoko Tāngata - Māori Talent Development Fund aims to advance the progression of Māori filmmaking talent. 

What we fund

Tautoko Tāngata- Māori Talent Development Fund focuses on three different areas of talent development for Māori key creatives (producers, writers and directors) and other roles that the industry identifies as requiring increased Māori representation.

  • Rangatahi Youth Development - grants for individuals, companies and organisations to run development programmes by, with or for young Māori creatives. 
  • Tuakana-Teina : Māori Mentoring and Support - mentoring support for mid-career and established key creatives working and sharing their expertise with Māori talent who are looking to develop or enhance their skills in a particular area and/or have a short or feature film project in development. 
  • Whakapakari Tangata: on the job development - internships, attachments and mentorships for emerging Māori key creatives. 

Who can apply

Rangatahi Youth Development

  • Individuals, companies and/or organisations with a proven track record of experience and success in their area/field in the film industry;
  • The application must focus on and directly benefit Māori Rangatahi aged 15 – 25;
  • The applicant(s) can be non-Māori however in their application they need to be able to outline how they plan to work with Rangatahi Māori. Please refer to Urutahi Koataata Māori Working with Māori in Film and Television;
  • Guilds and Organisations who are already receiving funding through the NZFC Strategic Training Fund are not eligible for support through this fund.

Tuakana-Teina : Māori Mentoring and Support

  • Individuals, companies and/or organisations (Tuakana) with a proven track record of experience and success in their area/field in the film industry;
  • The application can be made by either the Tuakana (senior) or the Teina (junior);
  • The Teina (junior) must be Māori;
  • The Tuakana (senior) can be non-Māori;
  • Guilds and Organisations who are already receiving funding through the NZFC Strategic Training Fund are not eligible for support through this fund.

When your application is received, it will be checked for eligibility and that all relevant information is included.  Once your application is confirmed as being eligible, you will be advised of a decision within four to six weeks.

What you need

Rangatahi Youth Development

  • CV and biography for the individual, company or organisation applying;
  • Short history of you or your organisation or company in the area of rangatahi development (if applicable)
  • Development proposal outlining the following:
  • Programme outline, delivery and objectives
  • Key areas of learning
  • Timeframes (within a 12-month period at time of application)
  • Desired outcomes
  • Best practice standards for working with young people (refer to Ministry of Youth Development best practice standards for working with young people)

Tuakana-Teina : Māori Mentoring and Support

  • CV and biography of both parties – Tuakana (senior) and Teina (junior)
  • Development proposal outlining the following:
  • Key areas of learning/development and/or exchange of skills
  • Timeframes (within a 6-month period as at time of application)
  • Desired outcomes
